"Mommy, where do Underbunks come from?"

One night, I was in the lower bunk, reading our boys a bedtime story. I looked around at the cozy room I had created for them. The furniture, the unique toys, the bedding. Everything was dialed in. The room was Pinterest Perfect!

Then, I glanced up and couldn’t believe what I saw: wooden slats, crumpled bedsheets, and the underside of a mattress. It was so boring. And Ugly! How could I have I missed this? It looked like the inside of a packing crate! Why couldn’t it be colorful and alive like the rest of the room? I looked down at the beautifully illustrated storybook we were reading and realized I held the answer in my hands.

And that’s how Underbunks was born.

Gezellig

I lived in the Netherlands until I was eight years old. I remember skating down frozen canals at Christmas time. In the summer, I’d ride my bike all over town with my guinea pig Simon in a wicker basket on the handlebars. My entire childhood was filled with a sense of magic, adventure, and a feeling that the Dutch have a special word for: Gezellig.

It means many things all at once: warmth, coziness, good company, great atmosphere and, most of all, a feeling of belonging and togetherness. And that’s why I’m covering up rows of boring, old wooden slats with dragons and fairies and unicorns. To make the world more Gezellig, one bunk bed at a time.

Enjoy!
